Polokwane, 15 September 2024 – Police have arrested three suspects in Phokoane village, Nebo policing area, on charges of murder, hijacking, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. The arrests took place on Sunday, 15 September 2024.
The operation followed an incident in which members of the Nebo and Jane Furse Tracking Team, who were tracing wanted suspects, spotted a suspicious white Toyota in the area. The police approached the vehicle, which had four occupants, and called for backup from CSC members. As the police closed in, the suspects opened fire, prompting the officers to return shots.
Two of the suspects were shot during the exchange. One was fatally wounded and died at the scene, while the second suspect was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The remaining two suspects were arrested on-site.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle used by the suspects had been hijacked earlier in September 2024 in the Nebo policing area. The operation was a result of ongoing efforts by the police to crack down on criminal activities in the region.
Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, expressed her approval of the swift arrests, commending the officers for their bravery and tactical response.
The suspects are scheduled to appear before the Nebo Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, 17 September 2024. Further investigations are ongoing.
