The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), General Fannie Masemola, has provided clarity on the recent reports of over 4,000 alleged unlawful arrests and claims amounting to R2 billion in the 2023/2024 financial year.
General Masemola emphasized that the figure of 4,100 represents claims submitted by individuals who were arrested, but these claims are still under legal review. The SAPS legal division is currently assessing the validity of each case to determine whether the claims are justified. He further stated that the SAPS has not yet made any payments to these claimants.
Each case is being thoroughly evaluated on its own merits to decide whether to settle
