The Border Management Authority (BMA) intercepted a substantial amount of cash at the Oshoek port of entry with eSwatini, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to securing South Africa's borders.

On September 25, 2024, a 39-year-old South African attempted to cross into eSwatini with R424,800 in cash hidden in a black plastic bag. However, vigilant BMA Border Guards thwarted the attempt during a routine search operation. The suspect was charged with violating the Financial Intelligence Centre Act and the Customs and Excise Act for failing to declare the cash

In an audacious move, the suspect tried to bribe the Border Guards but was swiftly handed over to the Hawks for further investigation. The suspect is set to appear before the Elukwatini Magistrate Court on the same day.

This successful interception comes on the heels of another triumph by the same Border Guard, who apprehended a Swati national attempting to cross the border illegally on September 20. The suspect had contravened bail conditions related to charges of possessing a stolen Toyota Fortuner .

Commissioner Dr. Michael Masiapato commended the BMA Border Guards for their diligence and professionalism. "These successful interceptions showcase our Border Guards' commitment to maintaining the integrity of our ports of entry. We will continue collaborating with law enforcement agencies to ensure justice is served," he stated.

The BMA urges travelers to comply with relevant laws and regulations governing border crossings to avoid legal consequences. As part of their mandate, the BMA remains dedicated to detecting and preventing cross-border crimes, including financial offenses.
