The SA Police Service reports a 6.5% increase in daily car thefts across South Africa, with hijackings accounting for 55% of vehicle crime incidents. To reduce your chances of becoming a victim, King Price, client experience partner, suggests that alertness is crucial. He recommends timed trips, knowing hotspots, checking if you're being followed, and staying aware of your surroundings.

Shopping malls remain a primary hotspot for hijackers, but sporting and school events are also frequent hunting grounds. It's advisable to keep your car safely in your garage and hail a ride to sports matches, especially if you plan to have cold drinks during the trip.

If you suspect you're being followed, don't turn into your driveway and drive directly to the nearest police station or armed response hub. If the car stays behind, stay in the road while the gate is opening to allow space to escape if a suspicious vehicle approaches.

Watch out for cars slowing down, as there's an increasing trend of hijackers stopping suddenly on highway offramps or busy streets. Stay alert to what's happening around you and watch out for potential threats. Keep windows closed and doors locked, and leave enough room in traffic to avoid getting boxed in.

If a hijack occurs, give up your car and possessions, move slowly, keep your hands visible, and don't look directly at the hijackers. If you have children in the car, tell them you'll take a few seconds to get them out. Your life is worth more than your earthly possessions.

Lastly, ensure your car insurance coverage is up to date and offers emergency assistance. Save the number on your phone to remember in case of an emergency.
