Four male suspects aged between 20 and 32 were apprehended on Sunday, 07 July 2024, for possessing unlicensed firearms and ammunition at the N1 road-Mookgophong Turn-off. Their arrest follows intelligence about a fatal shooting that took place at Boditsane around Mamaolo village in the Lebowakgomo policing area on the same day. The suspects were reported to have been driving in a white VW Polo sedan with a provided registration number, traveling along the N1 south direction.

In response to this intelligence, members of the SAPS Provincial Flying Squad, Waterberg Flying Squad, and Private Security Companies swiftly conducted an operation and intercepted the vehicle matching the description on the N1 road. The four occupants, including the driver, were tactically cornered, and a search revealed that two suspects were in possession of unlicensed firearms, while the other two had ammunition. Subsequently, all four suspects were promptly apprehended.

The Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo Police, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has praised the collaboration between the Police and Private Security Sector in combating criminal activities within the province. The suspects are anticipated to appear before the Mookgophong Magistrate’s Court, facing charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, with two of them also facing an additional charge of Contravention of the Immigration Act.

Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
