The South African Department of Correctional Services (DHS) has arrested two officials at the Ermelo correctional facility for attempting to smuggle dagga and a mobile phone with accessories. The officials were caught during a surprise search, and they are now facing criminal charges. The department will initiate disciplinary proceedings in line with its policies and legal procedures. The DHS's team intercepted the contraband, and the department is committed to enhancing security protocols and ensuring adherence to strict ethical guidelines.

The incident underscores the DHS's commitment to maintaining integrity and security within correctional facilities and combating illegal activities in the correctional system. The DHS remains dedicated to upholding the integrity of its operations and ensuring the safety and security of its facilities. In recent weeks, the DHS has confiscated money, cellphones, and dagga pipes from inmates during a raid at the Goodwood Correctional Centre in Western Cape. The surprise raid followed the surfacing of a TikTok video by Zimbabwean national Bornface Banks, which boasted that inmates lived for free without paying for rent, electricity, toiletries, food, and education.
