A man, 47, was apprehended in East London after mandrax worth R2 million was discovered concealed in a laundry basket at his home by the police.

Police acted on a tip-off about a man vending drugs at Buffalo Flats in East London.

"About 12.45 am, they quickly acted on information and proceeded to the house of the accused male," stated police spokesperson Captain Hazel Mqala.

Upon arrival, the police conversed with him, and upon searching the residence, they uncovered drugs (mandrax) in his room in a washing basket.

"Drugs with a street value exceeding R2 million were seized, and a 47-year-old individual was taken into custody," she added.

The suspect has been charged for drug dealing and is scheduled to appear at East London Magistrate’s court soon.

The Buffalo City District Commissioner, Major General Christopher Wright, praised the community for their role in the fight against drugs and for providing valuable information that led to the recovery of the drugs and an arrest.

In a separate incident this week in the Eastern Cape, two individuals were arrested after being found in possession of dagga worth R800,000.

Two males from Butterworth were caught by police loading twelve bags of dagga into a bakkie.

They were detained and subsequently released on bail.
