A 20-year-old Chinese national was detained in the Western Cape for trading counterfeit, illegitimate, and unlawful goods, including illegal alcohol worth R24 million. The suspect is scheduled to appear in Bellville Magistrates Court after being charged. Police have successfully stopped the illegal trading of counterfeit goods, which impact South Africa's economy. On June 12, the Provincial Counterfeit Illicit and Contraband Goods Task Team conducted a counterfeit operation in Eersteriver, where they seized liquor that did not meet sale requirements.

In January, police uncovered over R5 million in illegal trade of illicit counterfeit goods. The take-down operation involved SAPS, Customs, Home Affairs, and brand protectors from several popular products, resulting in the recovery of R5.1 million in phoney clothing, watches, and other apparel. The take-down operation began at around 11am with a search warrant at a shopping complex near the Bellville taxi rank. Three Somali men in their mid-thirties were arrested, and counterfeit goods worth R5.1 million were seized.
