Botswana National Sentenced to Death in Bangladesh for Drug Trafficking

GABORONE, Botswana - A Botswana citizen, Lesedi Molapisi, has been sentenced to death in Bangladesh for drug trafficking, President Mokgweetsi Masisi announced during a press conference at the SSKIA.

Lesedi Molapisi, 30, was arrested on January 23, 2022, at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, Bangladesh, with over 3.145kg of heroin in her possession. She was traveling from South Africa via Doha on a Qatar Airways flight.

The Additional Metropolitan Session Judge, Court Number-8, Dhaka, Md Aminul Islam, delivered the death penalty verdict on Monday. Bangladesh has strict anti-drug laws, and the death penalty is often handed down in drug trafficking cases.

Lesedi's family is seeking information about her situation and has reached out to the Botswana government for assistance. The government has sent a delegation to Bangladesh to investigate and appeal for clemency.

This case highlights the severe consequences of drug trafficking in Bangladesh and the importance of awareness and caution for travelers. The incident has sparked concern and sympathy in Botswana, with many calling for leniency and support for Lesedi's family.

The situation is ongoing, and further developments will be monitored and reported.

HMR News Updates will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
