In its ongoing Operation "Shanela," aimed at curbing criminal activities across Limpopo province, the South African Police Service (SAPS) has reported significant progress. The operation, also known as "Kukula," was conducted between 8th and 14th April 2024, resulting in the arrest of 423 suspects for various crimes.
The arrests were made for offenses including burglary, malicious damage to property, theft of motor vehicles, possession and dealing in illicit cigarettes and drugs, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, possession of explosives and counterfeit goods, contravention of the Immigration Act and Wildlife Act, and illicit mining.
During the operation, SAPS confiscated four illegal firearms, ammunition, 868 counterfeit goods, drugs such as dagga, nyaope, and crystal meth, large quantities of alcohol, and a substantial amount of cash. Furthermore, 141 undocumented persons were arrested at various locations.
The operation, a part of SAPS's continuous efforts to ensure public safety and combat crime, involved coordinated efforts from multiple units within the police service and external role players. Through intelligence-led operations and strategic deployments, SAPS targeted key areas known for serious and violent crimes.
Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe commended the dedicated officers involved in the operation for their commitment and dedication in fighting crime, especially as the country prepares for the upcoming national and provincial elections.
Some of the suspects have already appeared at various Magistrate's Courts across the province, reflecting SAPS's swift action in addressing criminal activities in Limpopo.
The success of Operation "Shanela" underscores SAPS's commitment to maintaining law and order in communities and sends a strong message to criminals that their activities will not be tolerated.
