The tight-knit community of Protea South is reeling from the tragic death of an elderly resident who was shot and killed by police officers. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, April 14, 2024, has sparked outrage and calls for justice among community members.

Eyewitnesses report that the officers arrived at the man's home, accusing him of selling alcohol without a license and demanding bribes. Despite his attempts to explain that the tavern belonged to his son, not him, and that his son was responsible for its operations, the situation quickly escalated.

In a distressing turn, the officers pepper-sprayed the man and broke his arm before fatally shooting him. The daughter of the deceased, Priska Nhlawuleka Nhlamulo Maluleke, took to social media, stating, "I live at Protea South, Soweto, police station is in Protea North. The people that killed my father are the ones that I posted." Her heartfelt post reflects the pain and grief of losing her father.

The incident has reignited discussions about police conduct and accountability in South Africa, particularly in communities like Protea South. Residents are demanding justice for the slain man and calling for an end to police brutality and corruption.

In a show of anger and defiance, the community later burned the police van involved in the incident. As the community mourns the loss of a respected member, they are also united in their determination to seek justice and ensure that such a tragedy never occurs again.
