Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga was robbed, and her bodyguards were stripped of their guns while travelling on the N3 near Heidelberg on Monday morning.
Police confirmed that Chikunga and her protectors had stopped to change a tyre, punctured after objects were seemingly intentionally placed on the road.
Chikunga's bodyguards were changing the tyre when the gang attacked them.
The two bodyguards and Chikunga were robbed of their firearms and belongings.
The SAPS is currently investigating the case.
