General Masemola Commends SAPS: Foils CIT Robbery, Intensifies Nationwide Crackdown

According to reports from the South African Police Service (SAPS), General Fannie Masemola commended the police for thwarting a cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery in KwaZulu-Natal. In Vrede, Free State, a heavily armed gang planning a CIT heist was intercepted following intelligence. During a shootout with police and a private security company, a 40-year-old security officer was tragically killed.

The suspects, traveling in a hijacked Dodge sedan that overturned during the confrontation, engaged in a shootout resulting in two injuries and arrests. The police recovered an AK47, an R5 rifle, and over 240 rounds of high-caliber ammunition. In Memela, approximately 52km from Vrede, another group of suspects was intercepted, leading to the arrest of three individuals. Two stolen Mercedes Benz sedans were recovered at this scene.

General Masemola emphasized the SAPS commitment to a safer festive season, stating that operations are in full swing. He highlighted the intensified efforts nationwide to prevent and combat serious and violent crimes, especially aggravated robberies. The General affirmed a resolute pursuit of wanted criminals, emphasizing the determination not to lose this fight.
