The Democratic Alliance (DA) expresses deep concern and sorrow over the alarming increase in farm murders in South Africa, demanding urgent action to address this crisis. The recent brutal murder of Theo Bekker in Mpumalanga and the dangerous rhetoric inciting violence against a particular group in society, as exemplified by Julius Malema's "Kill the Boer" statement, have raised serious red flags that we cannot ignore.
The DA firmly believes that political leaders, regardless of party affiliation, must prioritize the safety and security of all citizens. Unfortunately, the ANC's failure to address Malema's inflammatory statements and the escalating farm attacks is indicative of a lack of leadership in protecting South Africans.
To investigate the potential link between inflammatory rhetoric and the surge in brutal farm attacks and murders, the DA urgently calls for the establishment of a commission of inquiry. This inquiry must be thorough and impartial to uncover the underlying causes of these attacks and inform comprehensive measures to ensure the safety of farmers and farmworkers.
President Cyril Ramaphosa must demonstrate decisive leadership and unequivocally condemn these acts of violence. The safety and security of all citizens, irrespective of their background, must be at the forefront of our national agenda.
The DA has consistently advocated for proper rural safety units and reservists, recognizing the unique challenges faced by rural communities. The current insecurity in these areas demands immediate action and support from the government.
Given the inadequate response from the SAPS minister regarding policing in rural areas, the commission of inquiry becomes even more critical. It is time to unite all segments of society to address this pressing issue collectively.
In light of the harrowing historical examples, we must learn from, the DA vehemently condemns these senseless murders. Our hearts go out to the affected families, and we pledge to fight against dangerous political rhetoric that puts lives at risk.
Let us stand together, as a nation, to demand accountability, justice, and a safer future for all South Africans. We cannot allow history to repeat itself, and it is our duty to prevent any further escalation of violence. The DA remains committed to tirelessly working towards creating a secure environment for every citizen and upholding the principles of peace, respect, and unity in our beloved nation.
