Taxi Association Calls for Members to Uphold Peaceful Conduct During Ongoing Disputes
Location: Bellville, Western Cape
In the wake of recent unrest, violence, and property destruction that have gripped the Western Cape region, the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) Western Cape chapter issued a heartfelt plea to its members for a peaceful and lawful response. The call comes amidst growing concerns about the escalating tensions and public perception surrounding the organization.
The Santaco Western Cape headquarters, situated in Suite 805 of the Sunbel Building on Old Paarl Road, Bellville, released a statement on August 7, 2023, expressing deep regret and sorrow over the tragic events that have unfolded in the past few days. The organization, which represents taxi operators and drivers, voiced its sensitivity to public sentiment and a strong desire not to engage in actions that could harm or alienate the public.
Addressing the widespread perception of lawlessness associated with recent protests, the statement emphasized that this perception is being fueled by external actors and not by the members of Santaco. The organization vowed to work diligently to resolve all disputes with the City of Cape Town and reestablish a sense of trust within the community.
The statement urged all Santaco members to conduct themselves peacefully and lawfully, adhering to the interim interdict that was granted on August 6, 2023. The interdict aims to prevent disruptive actions and confrontations with law enforcement officers, other transport service providers, and the general public. The organization, which places high value on respecting the authority of the courts, also implored members to distance themselves from any form of violence or destruction.

Highlighting the importance of self-regulation within the transport industry, Santaco emphasized its commitment to working alongside the City of Cape Town to ensure the safety and efficiency of transportation services for patrons. It condemned all acts of violence and disruptions, emphasizing that peaceful negotiations are the only viable means of resolving disputes.
Santaco acknowledged the frustration and outrage stemming from recent incidents involving law enforcement officers damaging taxis and assaulting drivers. However, it unequivocally stated that any form of violent protest is not endorsed by the organization and does not align with its values. The organization emphasized that peace cannot be achieved through destruction and violence.
The statement concluded by encouraging members to report any incidents of violence, disruption of public transport services, unlawful blockades, and property destruction. Members found to be involved in such activities will face strict disciplinary action, the organization warned.
Looking ahead, Santaco Western Cape shared that its legal team is actively pursuing a constitutional challenge to a contentious by-law, scheduled for a hearing in February 2024. The organization sought to reassure the public that it operates as a service industry, not a terror organization, and is committed to upholding its values in all aspects of its conduct.
As the region continues to grapple with the aftermath of recent events, Santaco Western Cape expressed its condolences to the families and friends who have lost loved ones. The organization's plea for peace and cooperation stands as a testament to its commitment to the well-being of its members and the broader community.
