Tumelo Tshabalala, the son of the renowned kwaito icon Mduduzi “Mandoza” Tshabalala, is poised to carve out his own niche in the entertainment world, making his mark in both acting and music, while honoring his father's legacy.
While currently immersing himself in sound engineering studies, Tumelo is steadfast in his journey to find his own unique voice within the music sphere.
Tumelo expresses his determination to define himself independently, without feeling the weight of living up to his father's immense success. He states, “My father always wished for my siblings and me to pursue our individual potentials. I don't feel obligated to replicate his achievements. My aim is to establish my own legacy, to showcase the true essence of who I am. I don't limit myself to just hip-hop; my art includes elements of rap and singing.”
Tumelo's initiation into music traces back to his early years, reflecting, “My journey in rap began as far back as my memory serves. This upcoming album acts as a canvas for me to paint the picture of my identity as an artist. Occasionally, I infuse my vernacular into my rap to inspire those in my community ('ekasi'). Growing up with a blend of township and suburban influences due to schooling is a pivotal part of the story I aspire to communicate.”
Beyond his musical endeavors, Tumelo is set to make his acting debut in the biographical film, "Nkalakatha: The Life of Mandoza," scheduled to air on BET. In the film, he takes on the role of his own brother, Tokollo.

Reflecting on this new experience, Tumelo modestly shares, “This journey is profoundly humbling. It provides me with an opportunity to absorb the magnitude of it all. Being a part of this project allows me to gain a deeper understanding of the significant footprint my father left behind.”
Reminiscing about cherished memories, Tumelo fondly recalls his last moments with his father before Mandoza's untimely passing at the age of 36 due to a brain tumor.
“He left us with a smile, a testament to his character. Immersing myself in this production is akin to revisiting my childhood, shedding light on aspects that may have eluded me during those early years.”
