Riverlea, Johannesburg: The community of Riverlea, situated to the west of Johannesburg, has reported an upswing in their sense of security following the strategic deployment of the Specialised Forces of the South African Police Service (SAPS). This move comes as part of an ongoing effort to eradicate illegal mining operations in the area, which have long been associated with crime and unrest.
The residents of Riverlea expressed their gratitude for the heightened police presence during a recent community engagement event organized by the Police Ministry. This initiative aimed to foster a stronger bond between law enforcement agencies and the local population, who have been keenly affected by the scourge of illegal mining.
As a direct result of the intensified police operations, over 190 suspects have been apprehended, marking a significant step towards dismantling the illicit mining activities that have plagued the region. The majority of those taken into custody are believed to be undocumented individuals involved in the illegal operations.
The impact of these police efforts goes beyond the arrests themselves. Scores of illegal firearms, ammunition, stolen property, explosives, gas cylinders, and a variety of tools commonly utilized in illegal mining endeavors have been confiscated by the authorities. This seizure not only hampers criminal activity but also bolsters the overall safety and well-being of the community.
Police Minister General Bheki Cele underscored the multifaceted approach being taken to combat illegal mining. While the immediate focus is on curbing the activities of illegal miners, he emphasized that this represents just one facet of a larger plan. The ultimate goal is to stabilize the area, enabling other government departments to collaborate and address both the root causes of crime and the social issues that contribute to it.
General Cele also acknowledged the pivotal role played by the Hawks, a specialized unit within SAPS, in targeting key figures within the illegal mining network. These individuals, often referred to as "zama zamas," are believed to be instrumental in the coordination and organization of illegal mining operations. Their apprehension is a testament to the dedication and precision of law enforcement agencies in dismantling the intricate web of this criminal enterprise. source | SAPS For the latest news updates, follow HmrNewsUpdates on Twitter and hmrnewsupdates on Instagram.
