Prof. Jonathan Jansen, former vice-chancellor of the University of the Free State (UFS), has launched a vicious attack on his close friend, Prof. Mamokgethi Phakeng, former vice-chancellor of the University of Cape Town (UCT). Jansen claimed that Prof. Phakeng "almost collapsed UCT" and had "no clue on how to lead a university." He accused her of being "easy irritable" and having "no temperament of a leader." He claimed that UCT was "in a mess" because she was "toxic" and that things are now "stable" under Emeritus Prof. Pradeep Reddy, who took over from Prof. Phakeng in March 2023.
Prof. Jansen's message is baseless, malicious, disrespectful, and unprofessional. It shows a complete disregard for the achievements and contributions of Prof. Phakeng, who is widely regarded as one of the most influential and inspiring leaders in higher education in South Africa and beyond. Prof. Phakeng has an impressive academic record, with six degrees, four of which she studied for and two of which are honorary degrees from international universities. She is a B1 rated scientist by the National Research Foundation (NRF), meaning that she is internationally acclaimed for the high quality and impact of her research. She has published over 80 research papers and five edited volumes in mathematics education.
Prof. Phakeng has also demonstrated exceptional leadership skills, especially during the challenging times of student protests and the Covid-19 pandemic. She took over the leadership of UCT in July 2018, when the university was facing a crisis of legitimacy and trust among its stakeholders. Under her leadership, UCT achieved remarkable results in various global rankings. Since 2019, UCT was ranked number one in Africa in all five major world university rankings: QS World University Rankings, Times Higher Education World University Rankings, US News Best Global Universities Rankings, Academic Ranking of World Universities (Shanghai Ranking), and CWTS Leiden Ranking. UCT also made its debut in the Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings, where it was ranked number 39 in the world.
Prof. Phakeng has been a champion of social justice and inclusivity at UCT and beyond, advocating for the need to decolonize the curriculum, diversify the staff and student body, and promote a culture of respect and dignity for all. She has also been at the forefront of fundraising efforts to support students in need of financial assistance. Her accomplishments reached extraordinary heights, surpassing all previous records of the university for annual funds raised.
Prof. Jansen's message is not based on facts or evidence, but on envy and resentment. He seems to be unable to accept that Prof. Phakeng has surpassed him in every aspect of academic leadership and excellence. He has resorted to spreading lies and rumours about her in an attempt to tarnish her reputation and legacy. Prof. Jansen owes Prof. Phakeng an apology for his unwarranted attack on her character and achievements, and should retract his message and refrain from making any further false or defamatory statements about her. He should respect her as a colleague, friend, and fellow leader in higher education.
