Following an underground gas explosion, the public has been advised to avoid Bree Street in the Joburg CBD.
According to the Johannesburg Metro Police Department, the explosion happened in the city center between Bree and Simmonds streets.
On Wednesday evening, the region is in shambles, with witnesses going to social media to post horrific video footage and photographs of big and deep fissures in the road.
Following a massive explosion on Bree Street, traffic in the Johannesburg CBD has come to a halt.
Some cabs have toppled on the road, and law enforcement is attempting to shut off the area.
The area still smells like gas, and authorities are hunting for any injured persons.
Bree Street is now blocked to traffic.
We are aware of an explosion on Bree Street in Jhb CBD possibly on the gas lines underground.
At this time we request the public to *stay clear* of the area to allow emergency services to attend to the scene.
