Lephalale, Limpopo - In a successful joint operation between Limpopo Police and the South African Police Service (SAPS), significant progress has been made in the case involving the tampering of essential infrastructure at Medupi Power Station. Three suspects, including a 31-year-old employee of Info-Tech Maintenance Company at Medupi and Matimba Power Plants, are scheduled to appear before the Lephalale Magistrate's Court on Monday, June 19, 2023, facing charges related to the theft of Eskom copper cables valued at over R150,000.

The investigation was initiated on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, following a complaint of copper cable theft at Medupi Power Station. Collaborating with the Eskom Security Team, the SAPS launched a thorough investigation into the incident. A joint intelligence-driven operation was conducted, leading to the discovery of the stolen cables concealed within the power plant premises on Wednesday, June 14, 2023.

To apprehend the individuals involved, a trap was set up in anticipation of their return to collect the stolen copper cables. On the same night, at approximately 11:00 PM, four suspects arrived on foot at the Power Plant. Realizing they were being monitored, they attempted to evade arrest by scattering and disappearing into nearby bushes.

A subsequent intensive manhunt was launched, resulting in the arrest of one suspect near the railway line. The suspect, who was driving a Kia Picanto motor vehicle, initially attempted to flee but was successfully apprehended after a car chase. Preliminary investigations revealed that the arrested suspect, a 31-year-old maintenance sub-contractor, had intended to use the vehicle to transport the stolen copper cables out of the Power Plant.

Cooperating with the police, the arrested suspect provided information that led to the apprehension of two additional suspects at their residences in an informal settlement a few kilometers from the Power Plant. However, one suspect remains at large, and a manhunt is underway to locate and bring them to justice.

Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, the Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, commended the collaborative efforts of Limpopo Police and SAPS in achieving these significant arrests. General Hadebe further urged the community to assist in locating the remaining suspect by providing any relevant information that could aid the ongoing investigation.

Individuals with information that could assist in the arrest of the outstanding suspect are encouraged to contact the Investigating Officer, Sergeant Nndwamato Mambo, directly at 079 765 8761, or provide information through the Crime Stop hotline at 08600 10111. Alternatively, information can be shared at the nearest police station or through the MySAPS App.

The SAPS investigation is ongoing, and updates will be provided as new developments emerge.
