The newly elected mayor of Johannesburg, Kabelo Gwamanda, has denied claims that he scammed residents through his entity, iThemba Lama Afrika, into investing in a funeral scheme.
It has been established that Gwamanda operated the company and other businesses from his home in Protea North, Soweto. DA Joburg caucus leader Mpho Phalatse said she would bring these allegations to the attention of the SAPS for further investigation.
Gwamanda denied he ran away with people’s money, adding that anyone who claimed he robbed them should open a case against him. His office also said according to its records and clearance check, no case had been opened against him since he started the business.
Kabelo Gwamanda was elected mayor of Johannesburg.
A member of the Al Jama-ah party in the city council, Gwamanda received the backing of the ANC, EFF and minority parties. He replaced former mayor Thapelo Amad, also of Al Jama-ah, who resigned a few weeks ago
The total number of votes cast in Friday's election was 266.
Gwamanda received 139 votes, ActionSA's Funzi Ngobeni garnered 59, and former mayor Mpho Phalatse received 68.
The new mayor was sworn in moments after he was announced as the man at the helm of the country's economic hub.
