During a news conference on Thursday, DCS National Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale confirmed that the head of contractor G4S lost control of the facility following Bester's escape.
Thobakgale stated that the department has taken efforts to protect the jail by hiring a temporary senior manager to assume immediate control of the facility.
He also admitted that Bester's escape from Mangaung Prison was well organized.
Bester's escape was exceptional, according to Thobakgale, and the results of the investigative report plainly proved that Bester had assistance when he fled from "lawful custody."
