Jack Lerole Jnr |
Jack Lerole Jnr, also known as Sibusiso Lerole, is a penny whistle player and teacher from Diepkloof, South Africa. He was born in 1986 and learned to play the penny whistle from his father, the late Kwela Music Maestro, Big Voice Jack Lerole, who was a legendary figure in the South African music scene. Jack grew up in a musical family and his father's influence was a key factor in his development as a musician. He started playing the penny whistle when he was just five years old and soon joined his father's band, Kwela Tebza, where he honed his skills as a performer and teacher.
Over the years, Jack has shared stages with some of the biggest names in South African music, including African Jazz Pioneers, Moses Khumalo, Dolly Rathebe, and Dorothy Masuku. He has also performed at major music festivals, including the Moshito Festival, the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, and the Joy of Jazz Festival.
In 2019, Jack represented South Africa at the Young Euro Classic in Berlin, Germany, where he performed with Lira (SA) and Nils Landgren (Sweden) and sold out a show at Konzerthaus. This was a major milestone in his career and brought him international recognition.
Currently, Jack is a penny whistle teacher and band director at Morris Isaacson Center for Music in Soweto. Under his direction, the Morris Isaacson Center for Music band performed at the Joburg Arts Alive (Jazz in the Lights) 2023. He is dedicated to keeping the legacy of Township Jazz and his father's work alive. He believes that music is a powerful tool for social change and is committed to using his talent and influence to promote positive messages and inspire others.
In addition to his work as a teacher and performer, Jack is also in the process of recording his debut album, "Tribute to Jack Lerole." The album will showcase his unique blend of different styles of penny whistle, including Kwela, Mbhaqanga, and Afro Jazz, reflecting both African and global influences. He hopes that his music will help to spread awareness of the rich cultural heritage of South Africa and inspire new generations of musicians.
Through his music and teaching, Jack Lerole Jnr is preserving the legacy of Township Jazz and keeping the spirit of his father's work alive. He is a shining example of the power of music to bring people together, inspire positive change, and preserve cultural heritage.
