Murunwa Makwarela, the executive mayor of Tshwane, has resigned.
Makwarela is accused of providing fraudulent documentation regarding his 2016 sequestration.
The Gauteng High Court in Tshwane ruled that Makwarela's rehabilitation certificate was forged and that the court never granted it.
Tshwane's head of communication, Selby Bokaba, declared: "City manager Johann Mettler has requested Legal Services to investigate certain aspects around the rehabilitation notice that was presented to him by councillor Murunwa Makwarela yesterday. This was done as a consequence of various issues that were brought to his attention during the course of yesterday.”
According to a report from The South African, On Friday, March 10, 2023, the High Court in Gauteng confirmed that a rehabilitation certificate provided by Makwarela to the City Manager was a forgery. Mkwarela was removed as a councillor after it was discovered that he had been declared bankrupt. Anybody who has been declared bankrupt cannot run for office, according to the law.
Makwarela was barred from becoming Mayor when the IEC identified him as an unrehabilitated bankrupt.
Yesterday, the mayor was reinstated by the municipality. How will this affect the country's current position in the global market? Recently, the Rand collapsed upon the reshuffling of the cabinet, and it was grey listed!
