Helen Zille, federal council chair of the Democratic Alliance (DA), believes the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) proposed nationwide shutdown on March 20 will exacerbate South Africa's difficulties.
According to a tweet on Zille's account,
@helenzille:
"The national shutdown will make all the problems much WORSE than the shutdown is supposed to be against. When your roof is leaking, you do not make the holes bigger. When your house is collapsing, you do not undermine the foundations further. Don’t be stupid."
The EFF warned shop owners last week to lock their doors to reduce the potential of looting on the day.
The shutdown is intended to protest the continuous energy shedding and to call on President Cyril Ramaphosa to resign.
Additionally, EFF activists armed with loudspeakers reportedly advised township business owners to lock their doors on the day.
"We are saying to you close down all your businesses to avoid the looting. Close down all your shops to avoid the looting. Close down all your factories to avoid the lootings." “Close down everything; nothing will be operating on that day; we are avoiding the looting. So, we are saying to you, come and join the march, my brother; come and join the march, my sister."
According to the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the NPC, the event can destabilize and significantly hurt the country's struggling economy.
