According to G4S Prison Services, between September 2022 and January 2023, three employees of Mangaung Prison were dismissed.

The government contracted G4S to provide security at Bloemfontein Maximum Security Prison.

They were on duty the night suspected Facebook rapist Thabo Bester died in a fire.

The government is currently awaiting the results of the police investigation into the incidents that occurred at the prison that night.

In the meantime, corrections officials are investigating how Bester escaped.

According to earlier reports, the Department of Correctional Services is in contact with the security firm G4S to find out what happened when Thabo Bester allegedly died.

The company guards the prison where Bester is incarcerated.

On 3 May 2022, G4S Correction Services notified the Department of Correctional Services and the police of a fire at a Mangaung Correctional Centre and the tragic death of a prisoner.

On 5 May, following an initial investigation, G4S alerted police to several concerns surrounding the circumstances of the fire. SAPS was supplied with relevant information and evidence.

Three employees at the facility were suspended shortly after the incident. These employees were subsequently dismissed in
September 2022, December 2022, and January 2023 for their actions on the evening of May 3, 2022.

It is believed that Bester, a rapist, and murderer, died in a fire in his cell a year ago.

His reappearance has increased the risk of corruption in correctional departments and facilities.
