The Academy Awards have chastised Rock for smacking Will Smith and his wife during a comedy show that was live aired across the world. He was ready to comment "get whooped" and "you missed a spot" while watching the slavery drama Emancipation. Smith stepped onto the Oscars stage in March 2022 and smacked Rock across the face after the comedian made a joke about the looks of Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Rock had been fairly silent on the event until the end of his hour-long show when he accused Will Smith of "selective anger". He also caused friction amongst the three by pushing for a boycott of the Oscars in 2016, when Rock was the host.

Rock has addressed the matter of Pinkett Smith's affair, which she refers to as an "entanglement" in public. Smith was barred from attending the Oscars for ten years by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (OPS), and Netflix agreed to pay $40 million (R725.7 million) for two Rock comedy specials. The majority of Rock's presentation was spent riffing on issues ranging from Britain's royal family to the Kardashians, abortion, and his dating life. He finished by explaining why he did not fight back when Smith attacked him and advised others not to fight in front of white people.
